When Mr. Darcy came for tea the next day, he and Lizzy walked together again. He had an air that suggested he wanted to get her alone, so she steered them toward a private copse of trees. Lizzy anticipated him wanting to kiss her, so she was surprised when he dropped his arm from hers and started pacing. “What troubles you, Will?”

He paused and looked at her. “I dealt with Wickham.”

Her mouth opened. “What? How? When?”

He smiled, though his serious expression barely shifted. “I sought him out yesterday after leaving Longbourn. I made it clear he would stay away from the Bennet girls.”

Her eyes narrowed, and she moved closer. “How did you make it clear?” She searched his face for signs of injury before reaching for his hands to examine the knuckles for bruising.

He endured her inspection for a moment before turning his hand to hold hers. “We did not resort to fisticuffs, and I did not need to call him out. I arranged to buy him a position in a regiment in the north. It is an advantageous move for him, so he quickly agreed.”

She frowned. “I do not wish you to spend money on this matter or pay him yet more funds.”

“It is done. I would have paid ten times as much, but he was content to accept the commission, a small additional sum, and clearance of all his debts with the people in Mertyon.”

“That must have been thousands of pounds, Will. You cannot spend so much on him to solve my family’s problem.”

His hands cupped her cheeks. “I would spend a hundred times more just to see you smile for an instant. I did what was right and proper, but I did it for you.”

“Oh, Will.” She trailed off with a sigh as he bent his head for a small kiss. She wanted more, but he eased back. “Thank you.” It was inadequate compared to what he’d done, but it was all she could do for the moment.”
